Traditional quilt makers in New Mexico survey project, 1985- 1986.

Summary: Collection consists of material created from interviews with 109 quiltmakers of New Mexico who learned quilting in a traditional way from family or community members. Includes field notes about quilters, news clippings, correspondence, audio cassette interviews, videocassette, and images of quilters, quilts, and locations in the field. Project directors were Nora Pickens and Jeannette Lasansky; video director was Tom McCarthy. An exhibition entitled, "New Mexico Country Quilters" at the Museum of International Folk Art was generated from this material.

Since its official opening in 1953, the Museum of International Folk Art, a unit of the Museum of New Mexico, has sought to collect, preserve, interpret, and present material folk culture from all parts of the globe. It has developed notable collections of textiles, costumes, Spanish Colonial art, contemporary Hispanic crafts of the Southwest, and Latin American folk art.
